Course Overview

This course combines key elements of both the Literature and Language A Levels and equips students with both linguistic and literary analytical skills. The course focusses on the study of literary texts but using linguistic tools to be able to identify the stylistic qualities of each text.

There is also a creative writing aspect to the course in terms of recasting a scene from The Great Gatsby to show the way students have developed their own skills as a writer. This course is very popular with our students as it covers all aspects of English and develops both their linguistic and literary skills.

Texts you will study:

  • The Great Gatsby
  • Othello
  • The Handmaid’s Tale
  • Poetry of Carol Ann Duffy from the AQA Anthology
  • AQA Paris Anthology (literary and non-literary extracts)

Where will it lead?

This course will open up lots of options in Higher Education as it is relevant to many degree subjects. Students who have completed this course have gone on to work in marketing, publishing, law, teaching, linguistics, speech therapy and communications for the heritage sector.
